In the case of annealing a SiC substrate under ultra-high vacuum conditions, carbon nanofibers (CNFs) form between the CNT layer and the substrate. However, CNTs form without CNFs by annealing the substrate in an oxygen atmosphere. The mean length of CNTs is longer than those formed without an oxygen atmosphere.
