It has a quasi-spherical shape which allows a more uniform heat transfer compared to a cubic shape. If for the most of the deep space missions, consisting of large spacecrafts, an active thermal design can be implemented, for Shinen2, there are some challenges regarding the thermal design: the deep space probe will pass through very different thermal environments, its size is only 500 mm in diameter and an active thermal control is difficult to implement because it requires large equipment. For these reasons, instead of an active thermal control, a passive thermal control is used for temperature management.
