 note = {This article summarizes issues related to the SDGs and universities, and then examines what universities’ contributions to the SDGs should be in terms of “production of knowledge.” Although a number of universities have been implementing various initiatives related to the SDGs, from the viewpoint of educational sociology, the most fundamental function of universities is production of knowledge. Hence, universities’ contributions to the SDGs could be understood as a question of how and to whom universities are to deliver or to service with the knowledge produced. In this context, the SDGs should be regarded as a normative knowledge to be taught and researched. It would be desirable to integrate elements of sustainability in the university curricula and to transform academic staff into producers of knowledge about sustainability.},
