| 内容記述 | This study analysed the use of negative prefixes UN- and IN- in the correspondence of Queen Elizabeth I, who ruled England and Ireland from 1558 to 1603. In Present-Day English, negative prefixes include UN-, IN-, DIS-, MIS- and NON-, and above all, UN- has been highly productive in the word-formation. We have no doubt that these prefixes have contributed greatly to the negative expressions in the English. The principles behind the choice of negative prefixes are the following: the native UN- is added not only to Germanic words but to Latin words as well, whereas the foreign prefix IN- is used with only Latin words. In the period of Early Modern English, however, a large number of ‘doublets’ were produced from the co-existence of the native prefix UN- and the foreign prefix IN- such as uncertain/incertain, and incapable/uncapable, although today, we have dominant forms for each pair. In the fields of pragmatics, stylistics, and historical sociolinguistics, some recent studies on Elizabeth’s linguistic features, idiolects, have concluded that Queen Elizabeth I was “a leader of language innovation and change.” The present research is compliance with the aforementioned studies, although there are some potential limitations that should be addressed in future research. | |||||
