内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 Three popular novels published during 1844 and 1845, The Reclaimed Student: A Tale of College Life (1844), The Belle of Boston: or, the Rival Students of Cambridge (1844), and Nelly Brown; or, the Trials, Temptations and Pleasures of College Life (1845), describe the processes of how a New England college student in the first half of the nineteenth century enters the legal profession. Law was increasingly becoming a popular career among college graduates during the period, and the profession needed man with morality. Although the hero of each novel becomes a lawyer with high morality, the processes are varied. Hence, these novels focus on the issue of the utility of college as the site of moral education. Belle of Boston and Nelly Brown take a positive stance that college could help the youth to inculcate a moral sense by offering oratorical education. Reclaimed Student, on the other hand, takes a negative view of college, with the hero stepping into the road of ruin, not being able to reflect on his conduct on campus because of the temptation of bad company. It is a prison cell that enables him to reflect on himself and to be reborn as a lawyer. By contrasting the campus with the prison, the novel suggests that a moral sense is acquired through one's reflection and that the suitable place for acquiring it is not college but prison. In this paper, I will evaluate Reclaimed Student as an epoch-making novel that reveals the dysfunction of college as a place of moral education and regards prison as its alternative.
