内容記述 | With an aim to find ways to promote international students’ and foreign researchers’ substantial contribution to research community, this paper observes how a foreign researcher with intermediate level of Japanese language proficiency participate in a Japanese-based discussion at a seminar at a university. All the conversations during the seminar, including both regular utterances among the participants and side-talks between the foreign researcher and a Japanese graduate student sitting next to her were recorded, and analyzed considering her comments made afterwards. The results revealed the following: the researcher was clearly aware of the linguistic constraints she faced in fulfilling a leader’s role expected of her by the supervisor, and sought assistance from the Japanese student in (1) understanding the language, (2) grasping the point of vague interactions, and (3) ensuring appropriateness of her prospective remarks. Also, sometimes the Japanese student made spontaneous efforts to ensure that the intentions of the researcher's utterances were appropriately understood. To maximize the value of a stay by a foreign student/researcher both to him/her and to other students from the host country, it is best for us not only to offer linguistic and cultural assistance to a foreign student/researcher but also to encourage students from the host country to improve their ability to manage multilingual and multicultural situations. | |||||
